Sick

20130131_125450

Last night Grace was up a lot in the night tossing and turning eventually crawling in bed next to me.  I sensed something wasn't right and kept checking her forehead for a fever but nothing.  In the morning she complained of a headache but other then that said she felt fine.  We went back and forth but decided to keep her home.  And I'm so glad we did- by lunch time she was out.  Sleeping with a fever.  I think it might be the flu.  Boo to the flu.

Crossing my fingers these two somehow sneak by without getting it but it seems inevitable at this point.  We did make the best of it today by cuddling up and reading book after book mixed in with a few sparkle stories.  Snuggling and books- the only good part of being home sick.

I'll Tell You Why I'm So Happy

002

1.  I got nine and a half luxurious hours of sleep last night.  Nine and a half.
2.  I started out my day with a cup of tea prepared by Ryan.  He has been insisting that the "cup of happiness" needs to come at the beginning of the day, not the middle.  He is right.

3.  The sun is shining
4.  My children are happy (and well rested)

013

5.  My new spice jars came today (and are the cutest things ever)
6.  Jackson and I have some big snowboarding/skiing plans in the works

7.  Today is Friday
8.  Tomorrow I get to have a day away with Kirsten and Katie (well Nora too of course)

011

Yes I think our weekend is off to a good start!

One of Those Days

20130122_131026

Yes, today was one of those days . One of those days that had me brewing tea and scrambling to find my most inspiring books.  Thank goodness for these things- tea and books.  Had it not been for Thich Nhat Hanh I may have wasted my whole day away in that horrible state.  But instead I was able to mix my crabbiness up with moments of peace and joy.

Now if I could just get some sleep tonight I know I could start off tomorrow on the right foot.  Looking back on my blog I stumbled upon this post today and had a good laugh.  It does help to remember how quickly it passes.

Well geeez that went fast.  One already?  One.

This morning before Ryan left for work and Grace to school we all sang her Happy Birthday as she sat in her highchair eating her breakfast.  She grinned up at us with one of her giant toothy smiles that she saves for only her favorite people.

And to mark the occasion, yesterday she took her first step.  It still amazes me how much a person changes in the first year of life.

We celebrated her day by staying home as much as possible, which of course is Nora's favorite hobby.  And Jackson passed on his wooden horse (given to him by Grace on his first birthday, given to Grace by Lorry on her first birthday) which she is loving.

We will celebrate with the whole fam on Sunday.

Grace's Party

This year Grace wanted to have a swimming party and of course the only place to do this was at our hotel.  Since her class at school is smaller we thought the best thing to do was to include everyone (or all the girls anyway) and so we ended up with a party of 13 once her brother and counsins were included.  I will admit to waking up in the middle of the night the day before her party wondering if I made a mistake (13 kids in a pool!).  But thankfully several of the parents offered to stay too so it felt really relaxed.  And since everyone loves to swim, the party pretty much just ran itself while the parents visited.  Some homemade chocolate cupcakes and balloons was all it took to finish off the party.  Next year she said she wants to have the exact same party.

Homemade this Year

004

It was especially fun to make our gifts this year because Grace and Jackson were so into it too.  During the week while Grace was at school Jackson helped me make some of our handsalve for those who like handsalve and some of our granola for those who like granola.

038

In fact Jackson just might have been the busiest of all of us with his gift making.  He made some ornaments for people of which he created and sewed completely on his own.  He also found this idea in one of his craft books and wanted to make it for Grace to hold the colored pencils we gave her for her birthday.

034

Ryan helped him with this project but he did a lot of the sanding all on his own.

035

Grace decided to make a sleeping bag for Jackson's beloved "Pengy" for him Christmas.

040

She also did the sewing all on her own.

041

And for my two little artists I decided to make Grace and Jackson some art aprons.  I filled the pockets with glue sticks, paints, tape, a small chalkboard and a few other little odds and ends.

And then for their chalk a little chalk pouch.

057

058

Nora's present is still unfinished.  She doesn't seem to mind at all though.  Sometime this month I should get it all wrapped up.

007

But the all star gifts this year definitely were Ryan's.  For Jackson a sward and shield.

For Grace a dollhouse.

007

006

Ryan worked so hard on these, sometimes until late in the night (in a cold barn) to make sure they would be finished (or almost finished... the dollhouse is waiting for some stairs) by Christmas Eve.  I think he would say it was all worth it though to see their faces when they first opened them.

010

I'm now trying to talk him into changing his profession into a toy maker.
